Pursuit of Opportunity: Mozilla Open Leadership Program
Communities for the six kinds, in Open Leader season 7, Cohort E (Culture)
I applied for it with my idea about developing progressive tech communities when Adarsh S shared the link with me. I received the good news that I was selected on January 19th. Ever since then, I have had a phenomenal experience being part of the Mozilla Open Leader program.
Idea
Building Communities in 6 stages, from absolute beginner up to experienced level takes dedication and effort to get there. With a help of a website where they can get all the support they need to empower themselves and local communities, we can enhance the quality of technical caliber in cities world wide.
The website will conduct a personality test to see where does the individual lie between Type F and Type A. To add to this, additional resources to learn from free high quality online tools will be there for the students to benefit from.
It will be an open project where people can update the list of world wide communities and use our resources which are written with interesting art work and stories to convey the core message nicely.
Week 0
Completed all the registration formalities and joined the official slack channel where we introduced ourselves and discovered who our batch mates would be. I referred the documents that were shared with me to better understand my role as an Open Leader. Essentially my project will be Open by design for the world to benefit from and help them in their lives :)
Week 1 (31.01.2019)
Completed my assignment of analyzing the current progress of my project
Met my Mentor Ms. Nele Hersch from Germany. She herself is an Open Leader currently working on establishing open education system in the nation. She felt my idea was quite exciting as it quite well aligned with the mission of the Open Leader Program. The 30 minute meeting concluded on a happy note.
Week 2 (07.02.2019)
Had our first cohort meeting.
I got to meet individuals round the globe, learn the difference between ‘Open by default’ and ‘Open by design’ models and understood the way to move forward.
Types of community interactions
- Gifting — giving away content
- Creating together — making things together
- Soliciting ideas — asking community members for input
- Learning through use — gathering data to improve a project
- Enhancing value exchanges — improving equity and inclusion
- Networking common interests — connection people and projects
Assignment was to state how the current condition of the project is and how would I like it to be instead now that I better understand open. Also, I need to make a repo for my project and add a few features to it to make it especially open in the future.

Conclusion
Overall, it is a very well structured course and one that I would recommend everyone to try if you are interested. The content is CC Licensed so feel free to go through it.
I personally wish I made an effort to put in more time to see the project reach a commendable point. Hopefully in the upcoming MozSprint it will grow further.
I am grateful for this opportunity and urge everyone to participate as well.
